In Transit
"WHAT are you doing?"
"Jus' walkin'. That a problem?"
"Is when you're doggin' my steps."
"I ain't. Just thought I'd go back to the ship."
"Go away. Do I have to be guarded like some insensible grievin' widow?"
"That guilt stuff only works on Mal."
"Was he..."
"Monty'll get him home."
"Suppose I shouldn't have yelled at him."
"Suppose."
"'Suppose'? You care when I yell at the captain now?"
"Why ARE you walkin' me home? Think I can't take care of myself?"
"Hell Zo, I know ya can. Don't like walkin' on my own. Figgered you'd protect me."

Date: 2006-11-14 02:23 am (UTC)I love Zoe/Jayne. Be it romantic or friendly. They do definitely have a flirtation going. Another example, other than Jaynestown, was Shindig. "Cap'n, Can I have money for a slinky dress."/"I'll pitch in."/"I can hurt you."
While, granted, Jayne does the flirting, and Zoe does the threatening, it's all in good fun. I think it's Jayne's way of respecting her as both a woman and a warrior. And it's Zoe's way of creating comraderie with him. The thing Zoe and Jayne have most in common is Mal. They both follow him, hell or high water, and watch his back and each others. Even when they both know the plan is going to blow up in their faces, they still go.
I'm rambling on and on. But my point is that there is an untapped wealth of fic that could revolve around these two (much like Jayne/Inara) and no one is writing it. So I hope you're willing to give these two another go. You did a great job tapping into the complexity that would be Jayne and Zoe.

Date: 2006-11-14 08:48 am (UTC)My theory is that when Jayne first came aboard, he thought he could take Zoe on - one way or another - and she stamped him down hard enough to establish in his thick skull: 1) I am first mate, 2) I'm with Mal, all the way, and 3) forget about anything happening between us.
I think it took a couple of days for Jayne to get over that, and since then they've settled in a companionable routine - they know what they have in the other. I also note that Zoe teases him a bit, but never maliciously (insulting his intelligence, like Wash does), and that he has this almost complimentous low-level-leer for her.
I'll probably write some more about them, though it'll likely about this stage - I have more fun writing realising-there-could-be-more than with the let's-do-this-thing stage of relationships.

Date: 2006-11-14 03:35 pm (UTC)I read a fantastic Jayne/Kaylee Wash/Zoe pre-series fic, that had some just...amazing Jayne/Zoe moments, as well as some Jayne/Mal and Mal/Zoe (all in a non-romantic sense). It really flushed out some of the complications and intricacies between them all. I think Zoe and Jayne maybe aren't friends, but they're close to it.
