Mal heard the something fall outside the door of the storage compartment, and tried to push it open to see what it had been. The door slid open a mere inch and jammed. Mal sighed and scratched his forehead, then applied his favorite method of all; he kicked it.

Finally Mal heard movement outside the door and jumped to his feet. "Hello?" he called. "Ah, cap'n on deck and stuck in a closet........."
There was no answer, but he heard soft feet padding in his direction. A second later River's eye appeared in the crack of the door. "So, um, this is actually where you let me out," said Mal.
"Okay," said River. "You need something, I'll help you. I know what you need."
"That's - very kind of you," said Mal, hearing River walk away. "Actually, I know what I need too, ah, just told you I need ta' get out of here."
There was nothing but silence until River returned a minute later. Mal relaxed and stepped towards the door, but stopped short. Being deftly inserted through the crack was a carrot. Mal scratched his forehead again. "River?" he said. "Shall we try this conversation again?"
