Kaylee doesn't remember when the engine room became Simon's favourite place on the whole ship, but it is somewhat gratifying to know that it's entirely because of her. He likes watching her at work, and never seems to get bored, and after a few attempts at helping, has conceded that most of the time, she's better off working on it alone. She talks to him and the engine, sometimes simultaneously, as she works, and he listens. And mostly he smiles that smile of his and does his very best not to say the wrong thing.
She's working on a fiddly bit right now, and she forgot to tie her hair back earlier, so her hair is all in her face, but she can't hold it back because she needs both hands for what she's doing. Without either of them needing to say a word, Simon gets up. He doesn't go to get a hair tie for her, though. He comes over to her, smiling a little.
"Simon?"
He shrugs slightly, reaching up and carefully gathering her hair together and holding it up out of her face. He is, Kaylee realises, doing it just to be close to her, and the realisation makes her grin fondly. She focuses her attention on the engine part, muttering to herself and to it, working on the fiddly bits while trying not to concentrate on the warmth of his body close to hers.
"There!" she says, triumphantly, when she's done. She expects Simon to pull away but he leans closer, brushing his lips over her bared neck. She takes a startled breath. "Simon?"
He lets go of her hair and gently makes her turn round, cupping her cheek and kissing her eagerly. She wraps her arms around his neck and presses close to him, smiling at the feeling of his warmth, smiling more at the knowledge that without her coaxing he would never have got so daring with her. If this is, actually, really daring by anyone's standards but his.
He pulls away. "I should probably let you work now..."
"Oh no," she shakes her head, moving carefully as she forces him to back up against the wall. "Nuh uh. You started this."
His eyes widen a little, but only mockingly, and she is extremely glad that somewhere beyond prim and proper core-bred Doctor Tam, there's a real live warm blooded Simon who doesn't object to a little sex in the engine room. She's also glad that the noise of the engine drowns out most of the noises they make, because she'd hate the poor captain to realise what they're doing in his engine room and have a fit while the ship's medic is very, very busy.
