I ran an interactive meme over at my writing journal recently, and produced two Firefly crossover double drabbles featuring River as a result. The first is with Jareth from Labyrinth, the second set with Selene and Michael from Underworld.
I know, not typical Xover pairings, but I think they both work. Enjoy!
Title: Tiny Dancer
Author: houses_on_fire [houses]
Universe: Firefly x Labyrinth
Characters: River and Jareth [gen]
Timeline: General
Prompt: Dancing
For: Fan_Elune
Word Count: 200
Rating: G
A lifetime ago, Jareth taught her to dance, twirling and weaving through the other couples like they were mere statues. Each new step was like a revelation; River took to it like flight.
He had caught her when she fell from her world and spun her away. She did not come the usual way, through fear and hate. She wished herself to his realm—but not all of her, just the part that needed to dance.
He was safety in her darkness.
She was never truly in his world, but he could not resist the phantom temptation of her small hands, the tremble of her breath on his shoulder. His magic called, and she slipped away to answer him whenever she could. She danced on the thin line between realities, a sliver of imagination that shattered against his magic with the grace of death.
She waltzed like one entranced.
He wondered if she ever understood he was as real as she. River spoke rarely, a ramble of thought that sparkled against his magical splendor. He wondered what her body was doing while her mind danced with him.
And whether he had the strength to follow her into that bright life.
Title: Flipside
Author: houses_on_fire [houses]
Universe: Underworld x Firefly
Characters: Selene, Michael, River Tam [Gen]
Prompt: Family
Timeline: Post BDM
For: Sonya
Word Count: two 100 word drabbles
Rating: PG, implication of violence
Part 1
In lives as long as hers, family was a lost luxury. Selene was lucky in Michael. More than family, he was the half she’d forgotten she lost.
Time stretched into the black and humanity took to the stars, but still Selene wished for something more. Someone to run through the sunlit corridors of her memories. Replacement for her slain sister, perhaps?
She never thought she’d actually find her, this child’s wish: a new sister of her soul.
Especially not that frail slip of a girl they tried to help, realizing too late that River Tam needed help from no one.
Part 2
They came from before, when Earth-that-was gleamed with promise. River saw the way they shone inside: sparkling shards of glass. She stretched out her hand, running her fingers gently down the other woman’s cheek, and began to cry.
“Are you hurt?” she asked.
River shook her head, “Not on the outside. But I’ve been looking for someone to play with, someone who understands.”
The trio looked at the carnage at their feet. The woman smiled, holding her gun like a lover’s hand.
“Yes, we know how to play the way you do.”
River smiled through her tears. “Family always does.”
I know, not typical Xover pairings, but I think they both work. Enjoy!
