Mal chuckled at Simon’s horrified expression when River cornered Jayne and took him up on his threats to demonstrate, to their mutual satisfaction, that despite his name he was all man.
Simon was still opening and shutting his mouth helplessly, as he attempted to reconcile his naïve past assumptions of River’s stagnant development with her current bold and womanly behavior. Shaking his head in helpless amusement Mal hooked his arm around Simon’s shoulders and dragged him out of the mess.
Once they were halfway down the catwalk Mal let his grip relax and turned to face the younger man.
“How…Why…What just happened in there?”
Simon stuttered to a stop and then started again, “And why didn’t you stop them?”
Mal just grinned sympathetically down at him and admitted, “Ain’t much point, is there? That sister of yorn knows her own mind, I’m thinking, and I’ve noticed my orders against inter-crew relations hasn’t done a whole lot’a good with anyone else on this boat, so I don’t have much high ground to stand on this time ‘round. ‘Sides I’d’ve had a hell of a time convincin’ those two to listen when they know I’ve been fixin’ to break that rule myself.”
Simon frowned, reacting to the first part of Mal’s argument. He was unconvinced of there being any validity in Mal’s point.
“Inara, you mean?” Simon pondered that last point aloud.
Mal smirked down at the shuai boy before him and shook his head.
“T’ain’t ‘Nara I meant.”
Mal leaned in predatorily and half-growled against Simon’s soft, pretty lips. Simon’s mouth tried to fall open in shock, but was forced open for another reason entirely.
‘A much more pleasurable reason,’ Simon decided hazily. ‘And maybe, just maybe, Mal’s earlier argument had had a small point.’
Mal, on the other hand, was absolutely certain that he had.
