SUMMARY: During the war, an unexpected part of Zoe's life is revealed.
NOTES: The figure of Mrs. Alleyne is heavily based on that of Mrs. Seacole, a Jamaican Creole woman who operated an officer's mess and store during the Crimean War, acting as equal parts nurse, profiteer, and cook. She was the only woman to operate so close to the actual front and go among the men in the trenches. Her autobiography is a must for anyone interested in the Victorian period, colonialism, nursing, or a good old-fashioned travel narrative. Huge thanks to vandonovan for his thorough beta.
