Author's Note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] jcd1013, who requested, and I quote: "Your challenge is to write a friendship/possibly UST story between Mal and Kaylee, taking place after Serenity, with maybe a minor confrontation about her dating Simon. An optional word prompt (taken from my fanfiction generator) would be 'dirt'."

There were smudges of dirt on Kaylee's hands, across her cheek, even on the tip of her nose. Truth be told, it was a beautiful sight of normal amidst the whirlwind of crazy their lives had been these past weeks.

Fact was, "normal" was hard to come by on Serenity on the best of days, but after Miranda... Sure, Inara was settled back into her shuttle, but Book and Wash were gone for keeps, and there was just no pluggin' those holes. It was no surprise, then, that the sight of Kaylee crawlin' out from under the engine, a crooked smile on her face, red hair in disarray--just as she'd done forever and always--brought a smile to Mal's face.

"Hey, Cap'," she greeted him in that right cheerful voice that somehow never raked his nerves wrong.

"Hey there, little Kaylee. What's the good word on my ship?"

Her grin split wider. "Shiny. Those parts we picked up on Hestia did just the trick."

He cocked his head to one side, studying her. "I'd reckon those quick hands of yours had more to do with it than any second-hand parts bought on a fourth-rate world."

She flushed slightly under his praise. "'Tweren't nothin'. Me 'n S'renity have an understanding is all."

"You just keep right on understandin', then. Grub's ready, if you want some dinner."

Her attention was already back on the engine. "Sure, Cap'. I'll be along in a bit," she said vaguely.

He smiled as he walked away. A beautiful sight of normal indeed.

Kaylee hadn't shown up for dinner, so Mal made sure to set some aside for her before Jayne devoured it all. It just wouldn't do to have his mechanic goin' hungry. Inara raised one perfectly sculpted eyebrow as he carefully made up a plate, but she didn't comment.

He waited in the galley an hour past dinner, but still Kaylee didn't appear. Exasperated, Mal gathered up the plate and a mug of hot tea, and went in search of her.

As expected, she was still in the engine room, wrench in hand, tinkerin' with one gizmo or another. She didn't hear him come in, and she 'bout jumped outta her skin when he said her name.

"Cap'!," she exclaimed, holding a hand over her heart. "Don't sneak up on a girl like that!"

"Sorry," he said, not looking the least bit so. He held out the plate and mug to her. "You missed dinner. Don't your fancy doc boyfriend tell you that's not healthy?"

She cast her eyes to the deck, obviously stung by his words. "Be nice, Cap'," she said softly. "'Sides, Simon ain't my boyfriend anymore."

He tried to hide his surprise, and didn't quite succeed. "That so?"

She nodded, still not looking at him.

He stepped closer, tipped her face up with one hand. "You okay?"

Her smile was wistful. "I'm fine. Me and him--we just didn't fit, no matter how much I wanted us to."

He bent to press a kiss to her forehead. "Eat your dinner," was all he said, and then he was gone.

She took a sip of tea, watched him walk away. No, she and Simon didn't fit--and one of the reasons had just brought her dinner.

oh.... short, and sweet, and near-to-brimming over with possibilities! I'd love to see more in this little universe :)

Very sweet, very simple, which is what makes it entirely plausible. Your feel for the characters, how they speak, move and think - the very normalcy you're talking about - could make an M/I girl believe this. Nice job.
