Title: Just Like Any Girl Would Be

Summary: Few days after the whole thing with Early. Things are basically back to normal, or so it appears on the surface. Please note. I fail with summaries.
Rating: I'm going to say PG-13 for Chinese swearing and mention of threatened rape
Characters: Mal, Kaylee, Simon and River. Mentions of Zoe, Wash, Jayne, Inara and Book
Pairing: None as of now
Warning: Disturbing thoughts because I wrote it, and I would say OOC, but the fact of the matter is...we don't really know what the characters are thinking, we just know how they act and that it could just be an act they put on, especially after all that has happened.
Spoilers/Timeline: Post "Objects in Space"
Disclaimer: Obviously I'm not Joss Whedon...meaning none of the characters are mine. I just use them for my own personal enjoyment....yes, that was meant to sound weird....leave me alone >.>
Author's Note: First Firefly fic I've written...so yeah...forgive me...please don't throw tomatoes at me.. and whatever chinese isn't found on Firefly websites is basically my pathetic attempt at sentance structure....so yeah....if sucks, I apologize. Obviously, it's not finished, just something I thought up last night and want to know if I should continue it. Read at your own risk.
Life upon Serenity was once again back to usual. At first glance, no one could tell that a bounty hunter had somehow gotten aboard and threw everything that was normal into a state of chaos. But Mal knew that all was not well. While Wash, Zoe, Jayne and Book were unsure of what exactly had transpired and it's reprecussions, the captain of Serenity had noticed secret glances, changes in habit and masks being put up to protect oneself. Inara had been shaken but assured him that she had been startled at the time but was now just fine. Which left Mal to contemplate the state of his resident mechanic, doctor and crazy girl. River seemed to be doing just fine and was adjusting to whatever new medicines the older Tam sibling had given her. Despite being shot, Simon seemed to be recupperating just fine, although he kept shooting worried glances towards Kaylee, who was the most puzzling of his crew. During the day, she seemed to be fine, playing with River, messing around in the Engine Room and being the ray of sunshine that everyone knew her to be. But Mal knew better. He knew that Kaylee hadn't slept since Early had been aboard, and she didn't flirt with Simon anymore. She was more reserved than she normally was and this was worrying because, while she acted the same, she shirked away from physical contact, and Mal didn't know why, and when he didn't know what was going on with his crew, Mal was NOT a happy captain.
It was late when Mal had decided to turn in for the night, but that plan was quickly nixed when he heard a scream from Kaylee's room. Jumping out of bed, Mal climbed the ladder in his room with amazing proficincy and was down in Kaylee's room in a heart beat. When he got there, he saw the young mechanic thrashing and pleading with no one. Rushing over, and put his hands on her shoulders and tried to wake her up.
"Mei-mei! Wake up...it's me..Mal..." Instead of calming down, the sleeping Kaylee thrashed even more, trying to push Mal off of her, but he kept a steady grip on the girl until she bolted up with a gasp, eyes widdened in fear.
"Mei-mei...shen me shi bu dui?" At her silence, Mal's worry intensified as Kaylee had taken to him like a younger sister and would tell him what was troubling her. "I can't help you if you don't tell me, mei-mei...does it have something to do with Early?" at her hesitant nod, Mal tensed slightly. What had happened while he'd been unconcious? "He's dead now...he can't hurt you..."
"He could have..."
"Yes...he could have, but he didn't...and he wouldn't want to anyway"
"He said he would..." Well, he was finally gettting somewhere, but Mal was still confused as Kaylee was making no sense.
"What did he say he'd do?"
"Give me a present..." the word present was seemingly spit out, as if it were a vile word, and considering who it was that had said it, Mal had a feeling it's meaning was not that of a normal present.
"Which was....?" Kaylee just sat there shaking next to Mal. "Mei-mei...what did he imply?"
"He was gonna rape me, Cap'n...said so himself...asked if I'd been...and said he would...t..then River took over the ship...and everything was just...he coulda taken her...he shot Simon...had everyone locked up...me tied up...I couldn't fight him e'en if I wanted ta...I...I told him where River slept...if he had...I would have deserved it...because I betrayed her." To say that Mal was shocked was an understatement. Had he known what Early had threatened Kaylee with, well...his death would have been extremely painful.
"Liou coe shway duh biao-tze huh hoe-tze fuh ur-tze! Shiong-muh duh duang-ren gou tsao de hwoon dahn!" At his outburst, Kaylee yelped and stared at Mal wide eyed. Realizing his mistake, Mal forced himself to calm down and looked at Kaylee in the eye, putting a hand on her shoulder. "I want you to listen to me very carefully, alright?" At her nod, Mal continued. "Nobody deserves what he threatened you with-no. I never want to hear you say something like that again. Anyone who thinks that they can do that belongs in Book's special Hell. You did what you had to do and let everyone out...you fought him in your own right, and River is just fine...dong ma?"
"But, Cap'n...I shoulda been able to fight more...I just...I..."
"You reacted as anyone would in that situation. I've seen a lot in my time, things I wish I had never seen...and the affect that rape has on a person kills a part of them, and no one deserves that...now...does the doc know?"
"Oh god..no...he doesn't even know I told Early where River slept...if he did...he'd never talk to me...I just know it..." Mal nodded and squeezed Kaylee's shoulder.
"Right...well...I won't tell him, but I am going to go get you something so that you sleep with out the dreams...alright?" At her nod, Mal stood up and headed towards the hatch of Kaylee's room. "I'll be back and if you need anything, you just let me know, alright?" Once he got an affirmative, Mal headed out of the hatch and towards the Infirmary where Simon was, seemingly getting pain killers for his gun wound, River sitting on the bed.
"Doc, I need something to help Kaylee sleep."
"She can't sleep until she accepts what happened." Mal looked at River curiously and shook his head and looked back to Simon, who looked upset.
"What is it?"
"What...oh...nothing. I didn't know she was having trouble sleeping is all. She should have come here herself..."
"She doesn't want to sleep" Simon looked to his sister curiously.
"And why is that?"
"You know why"
"Doctor....do you know what happened?" At his silence, Mal growled in frustration.
"Are you telling me that everyone on this boat knows except me?"
"No...she didn't tell me...."
"Then how..."
"She hasn't told anyone. She blames herself." If Mal weren't so concerned for his mechanic, he might have snapped at River to be quiet, but at the moment, he just wanted to help Kaylee sleep. Simon looked at Mal, since River already knew what was going on.
"The reason I know is that Early told me. I just didn't know if he had told Kaylee his intentions...but seeing at how she hasn't been sleeping, I'm guessing he had..."
"He damn well did tell her, and now she's afraid to sleep! So if you can just get me that medicine, it would be greatly appreciated"
"Of course" River shook her head and walked out, men never listened to reason.
