Title: Snow
Author:
blankscreen
Summary: It's been a long time since the crew has seen snow.
Rating: PG
Characters: Simon, River
Pairing: It's het, if you go for the under-undertones.
Warning: It could be construed as incestuous, I guess. I just think they have a beautiful relationship.
Disclaimer: Do you think, if I owned them, I would be doing this?
Author's Note: I wrote this in my mind as I was walking in the snow. It might not all be canon, I'm just working it around my idea. I know, I know, you'd kill me if you could.
The snow was thick in the air as we prepared to land. We all stood on the bridge, entranced by it. It had been a very long time since we'd seen snow and I think that I'd actually forgotten that it even existed. Serenity touched down and immediately the crew set to work. All except River and I. I sighed and made my way to the infirmary to make sure that everything would be in order when it came time for me to patch up the inevitable wound - bullet or otherwise.
River went to the cargo bay. She likes to watch the happenings when there's a job - it makes her feel involved. I finished getting everything organized, and I went to find River.
She wasn't in her usual spot and immediately I panicked...but I looked outside and there she was, out in the snow dancing to music only she could hear. She looked so graceful. River defines the word grace. Her head tilted back, a bemused smile upon her lips and her eyes closed like all she ever wanted to see was painted on her eyelids.
She spun in a circle on one foot and faced me. "Simon," she said holding out her hand.
I went to her, quickly because I realized she was out in the freezing cold in nothing but a light dress. I slipped off my jacket and gently placed it across her shoulders. She pulled it tight around her, then touched my chin with one long, delicate finger. She stepped back and for a moment I realized that as strong as River has proved herself, she still seems fragile, like glass. Like snow.
She dropped, crouched down, her hands sweeping across the snow, picking up a handful of it. The next thing I knew I was wiping it from my face. "You brat!" I laughed. She set off running and I gave chase. I know all her tricks and when she faked right, I went left, catching her around her waist. I pulled her into a hug and looked down at her.
Snowflakes had gathered across her dark eyelashes, and her cheeks were rosy from the frigid temperature. She seemed so ethereally beautiful that I couldn't help myself. I kissed the snow from her eyelashes and once, gently on her forehead, cradling her in my arms. "Simon," she said, and I led her out of the cold.

Lovely.
