If this shouldn't be here, go ahead and string me up across the bow of the ship toss me out the airlock tell me to delete it.

I'm working on a set-at-the-end-of-Serenity story and I've got questions about some of the locations. Help?

The deserty scene where they have the ceremony for Book, Wash and Mr Universe, is that on Mr U's moon? Or is it on Haven? Are those three really buried there or are they just memorial markers? Do the repairs to the ship take place somewhere else?

I've been through the Visual Companion script, where things are helpfully labelled "Desert Planet" and "Repair Yard", and I've watched the DVD approximately 615486351 times ... and nothing. It's not vital that I have exact canon-compliant locations, but it's really late (or really early ;) and the questions are kinda burning up my brain.

According to the novel, Serenity, which is excellent as is the Visial Companion, the funeral is held at Haven. The book says "their graves". I don't know if it is where they are actually buried. I would guess: yes, it is their burial place since they are back on Haven. I'm sure they would not have tied Book's body to the ship and they would have Wash's body and could have brought Mr. Universe's body back too.

The ship repairs take place on Persephone/Eavesdown Docks, because, "it wasn't the best repair shop in the 'verse, but it was the closest, and there was only so far they'd get with only one thruster.

Hope this helps.

I think Keith Decandido said in his interview with the Firefly Talk podcast that the location of the ship's repairs had to be shifted from the Evesdown Docks on Persephone back to Mr. Universe's planet after the novelization was completed. But then, nothing that happens in the final five minutes of the film makes sense, because it all requires a working ship to either get to Haven to bury the bodies, or make it to Persephone for repairs (although, in that case an Alliance tow is possible). If the bodies are buried on Haven, it means the crew had to hitch a ride to the planet, bury their dead, and return to Mr. Universe's planet to repair the ship. If Book, Wash and Mr. Universe rest on Mr. Universe's home turf, then somone had to make a trip to Haven for Book's body (again, no working ship). When we last left Serenity, it was pretty clear that there was no way in hell the ship would be lifting off anytime soon, and as I can't see Mal asking the Alliance for a ride...the sequence at the end of the film is not so much with the sense-making.

But it's a hell of a closing sequence, anyway.

You are right - the last few minutes (and even the few chapters of the novel) speed by. I have wondered how they got to Haven, which is where I always assumed they buried Book, Wash, and Mr. Universe. The ship was definitely banged up and in no shape to make any sort of flight.

It was still a great ending, however they got there. ;)

I dunno... I thought there was something unusual in one of the deleted scenes on the DVD about how Mal had ordered them to strap the Shepherd's body across the bow of Reaver-Serenity.

It was the gag reel, not an official deleted scene. Nathan was just running with it to crack everybody up - though it struck me in a sort of perverse way, too, that it was kind of a fitting tribute. Er, aside from the whole disrespect for the honored dead thing. *koff*

Oh, duh, that's right -- that was the blooper reel. *facepalm* And everyone trying so very hard not to crack up at it... : )

Hee. That was some good stuff. I need to go watch it again.

*sighs at all the stuff in the deleted scenes that very much would have added to the texture of Serenity*

Actually, in one of the deleted scenes from Serenity, when they're making the ship up to look like a Reaver craft, Mal says to put Book up on the front of the ship, something about respect? My copy is @ my best friend's house, and I'm @ work, so I can't refer to it right now, but Book WAS one of the bodies they stuck on the ship. So I'd guess the markers are memorials, and not necessarily "final resting places".

If you'd like, I'll try to find the exact quote later tonight. Just reply to this if you're interested.
