Summary:  Mal and Zoe hone their Big Damn Hero skills saving each other in the war. This is a three-part story inspired by the line in War Stories. It was originally going to be part of my extraordinarily long POW story The Losing Side (as a flashback), but in an effort to focus that tale a little bit I decided to take it out and post it seperately. It only ties into TLS in a very limited way - this was originally going to be a story Mal told Wash, but it didn't work too well that way. It does explain why Mal had that nerve cluster moved in his back, too.

River can't take any losses, especially about one who isn't dead, but just as lost to her as the rest of them and she feels like if she can't calm the voices in her head about him, she won't be able to stay in Serenity any longer.

Author's Note: Big, huge, gigantic thank you to my new and wonderful beta, gwenfrewi72. I knew that 'unofficial' title would one day change into 'official', and by knew, I mean wished/hoped/wanted. I almost didn't finish writing this one, I got stuck on two occasions, and she pulled me right out with brilliant suggestions and ideas. And let's not forget the spelling? I love writing, I'm told I'm a good writer, but I write so fast (and I just get too into it) I am known to change a he into a she and such. So, I'm the luckiest girl in the world to have finally found a beta who is so amazing, puts my English to shame, and is so caring that she helps me expand my vocabulary in ways I only dreamed of. Thank you my darling beta! Also, thanks to American Idol, for having someone sing another song to make me think of Mal/River (Hell, salt and pepper makes me think of Mal and River lol). It's country, yeah, I know, weird since I mostly am known to listen to rock, but I actually listen to anything, depends on lyrics and mood.
