"The answer's gonna be yes," Zoë proclaimed. Her and Mal struggled to carry a carton of seed and fertilizer between them. Procured illegally, it would fetch a good price further out on the rim.
Mal grunted. "Answer to what?" After they'd placed the carton down, he wiped his brow.
Man could be dense when he wanted, Zoë thought. "Answer to Wash's proposal."
"What proposal?" Confusion showed on Mal's face, and Zoë wondered just what went on inside his brain sometimes.
"The marrying kind." Zoë bent to check the contents of the carton and re-secure its top.
Shock filled Mal's face. "Marrying? You and Wash? My pilot Wash?"
Back turned to him, Zoë proceeded up to the cockpit to tell just that pilot they could be on their way. "One and the same."
As she stepped onto the mezzanine, she felt a strong hand on her arm. "You ain't answered him yet?"
"No." She didn't want to discuss that it was Mal and not Wash to be the first to know her decision. Much as she loved Wash, she owed it to Mal to inform him how his crew dynamic was about to change.
"Don't." There was nothing but authority in Mal's words. Zoë turned to face him fully. "Don't marry him."
"You don't have the right to ask that of me." Zoë knew it were just the love for a friend and companion in his words. He wanted the best for her, and didn't think Wash was it.
"Who said I was asking." His blue eyes bore into hers.
That riled her, 'cause asking was one thing, ordering quite another. For a second, Zoë thought about storming away. But when you had as much history as them, explaining was sometimes needed, and harmful words would be forgiven by tomorrow.
"I need this Mal. This ship, this freedom from the Alliance--Serenity is your dream; it's what you need to make the past right. But it's not mine. I need to make my own way, find my own salvation."
"In Wash?" Contempt for the man was evident in Mal's voice.
"In finding a man to accept me wounds and all, a man to love me despite my faults." She knew Mal did this as well, but not in the way she needed, not in the way that counted. "He makes me the woman I want to be, and right now, I need that Mal."
When she pulled away, his hand fell. "So, the answer's gonna be yes."
