Chapters 1-28

Radio Nowhere
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Wash said, stepping forward with his hands raised. “You cloned their daughter?”

“That sounds all manner o’ illegal,” Jayne muttered.

“You make it sound so crass,” Gabriel said.

“Well, ain’t that what you did?” Mal asked.

“Technically…”

“Cut the crap, Gabriel,” Regan spat out. “Yes, we cloned her!”

“Regan!”

Momma? I hear somebody coming.

“Who, Beck?”

I don’t know, but we need to get out of here.

“Pretty girl says time to leave,” River informed Mal.

“No one is going anywhere,” Gabriel said. “Not until we have the answers we want.”

“What other answers do you need?” Simon asked. “You’ve got my daughter’s coffin and, apparently, a clone of my daughter – what else can we give you?”

Momma – now.

“Pretty girl says time to leave,” River repeated, and grabbed Mal’s arm. “Pretty girl says now.”

“Well, we know you took her from the facility on Osiris,” Gabriel continued.

“What? Who?” Simon asked. “River? Yes, I fully admit I broke River out – more than fourteen years ago!”

“No, not your sister,” Gabriel said. “Daisy.”

“Don’t you think that if I knew my daughter was alive, I would move heaven and several earths to get her?” Simon snapped. “Be reasonable!”

Momma, he’s not listening!

“That’s what I told him,” Regan said.

Momma! Beck screamed.

But River had seen the movement, too, and tackled Mal to the ground as a bullet whizzed through the spot where the captain’s shoulder had been only seconds before.

“Holy hell,” Jayne said, and removed his pistol from its holster to return fire.

“Who the hell’s shootin’ at us?” Zoë demanded, retrieving her own gun.

Jayne managed to get off two shots before the movement in the trees was gone.

“You see, Gabriel, he doesn’t have Daisy,” Regan said.

“Well, we’ll soon know for sure,” Gabriel said, and held up the data-port. “I need the chip.”

“Excuse me?”

Don’t give it to him!

“The chip you removed from behind Rebecca’s ear,” Gabriel said, holding out his hand.

“You’ve got t’ be off yer rocker,” Mal said, getting to his feet. “We ain’t givin’ you anythin’.”

“River, give the chip to Daddy,” Gabriel wheedled.

Don’t you dare! Momma, if you give that to him, I’m going to… hold my breath!

“Beck, needs it.”

Like hell!

“Beck, no cussing.”

“Look at her, Gabriel, she’s obviously not in her right mind,” Regan said, pulling on her husband’s shirt. “She’s speaking to Rebecca as though… as though Rebecca spoke first.”

“’Cause she did,” River said, as though this should have been obvious.

Momma, I swear, I’m going to hold my breath. Break that damn chip!

“Beck, no cussing,” River repeated. Then she turned to her father. “Sorry. Beck says no.”

“Beck… says? Beck says? She has never said anything and she never will say anything – and you expect me to believe she’s told you not to give me the chip?”

“Yes,” River said solemnly. “Beck says no.”

“Well…” Gabriel motioned to Avery and Chapman. “Don’t just stand there!”

“I’m sorry, sir, did you want us t’ shoot them?” Avery asked.

“Yes, you idiot…”

Gabriel’s words were cut off as Mal shot first, hitting Chapman in the foot. “Gah!”

Zoë fired, too, her bullet whizzing by Avery’s ear. Jayne swung the shovel at Gabriel again. The man hit the ground again, as did Avery, falling victim to Zoë’s second bullet, which lodged in his knee.

Simon, taking advantage of the situation, snatched the data-port from his father’s hand. “Run!”

Serenity’s crew high-tailed it out of the clearing, their footsteps pounding on the stone path.

“Wash, get us airborne!” Mal ordered as he provided cover fire.

“Never been happier t’ do so, cap’n my cap’n,” the pilot said, scrambling up the cargo hold steps towards the cockpit.

“Come on, come on,” Jayne said, grabbing Beck’s wheelchair from River, practically sprinting over the remaining ground to the ship.

Breathless, their feet pounded up the ramp to the hold, where Mal stood ready to close the hatch. The engine hummed to life seconds after, and within a matter of moments Serenity was in the air, moving at top speed away from Rum River.

Mal turned to Simon. “Can you figure out what’s on that port?”

Simon looked down at the port in his hands as though surprised to see it. “Well, yes, of course.”

“Then you do it. Yer gonna tell us where we’re goin’ next.”

“What?”

“Doc, ain’t it obvious?” Mal asked, although clearly it was not. “They think we stole yer Daisy, but since we didn’t, we’re gonna go find out who did.”
