"It's not a case of 'first come, first served', you know," Zoe snaps, and then regrets it because Simon bites his lip and generally looks like the awkward young man he has never stopped being. He was polite enough about stating his interest, and it's not his fault there's no Wash anymore -- unless in some roundabout way involved with bringing River to Serenity, but she long ago stopped blaming River's presence for it.
"I didn't mean that," he says, softly, obviously trying to be careful of her feelings. He still isn't especially good at it, but Zoe's better than Kaylee about being able to tell that he's trying. That's, she thinks, why that relationship went sour so quickly. Simon was never thoughtless, just inexperienced.
"I know," she says, when she realises he's waiting for her acknowledgement. She puts a hand on his shoulder and squeezes gently, a little amused all of a sudden at his painful sincerity. "But maybe it's too early for me."
Simon's expression is absolutely wretched. "I thought it was, but River said that I should try, that I'd never know until I did -- oh, but don't blame River, she -- "
Zoe surpresses a smile -- and is surprised at herself for that. Real smiles still come hard, and she'd started to wonder if they always would. "I wouldn't blame River, don't worry."
He nods and then takes a breath. "Well, I'd better get back to the infirmary..."
Zoe takes a step closer to him, her hand still resting on his shoulder, feeling the faintest warmth from his body seeping through the cloth of his shirt. He stays still, speechless -- overwhelmed, perhaps, or maybe just quietly respectful of her feelings, of her testing the waters. She thinks it's the latter, though with Simon...
"You're a good lad," she says, quietly, emphasizing the lad -- because he does seem so very young, to her. He could do with a steady, experienced woman. But that woman isn't her.
"I haven't given up yet," Simon says, pointedly, as he turns to go.
Zoe finds herself interested to know what's coming.
