There was tension in the air, but unlike the normal 'Are we doomed' tension, this was different. I could sense the tension from the cockpit, but it felt stronger in the galley. Things are quite, too quiet. I thought to myself. Just then I heard a loud noise coming from the engine room, and rushed to investigate, since the rest of the crew was supposed to be asleep.
When I reached the door was I was surprised at the sight that lay before my eyes. There was Kaylee, mild-mannered, cheerful Kaylee, throwing things around and swearing half under her breath in Chinese. "Is everything alright?" I asked her, unsure if I should enter the room on stay in the doorway.
Kaylee swore again, this time out of surprise, not anger. "Wash," she said, turning to face me. "You scared me half to death. What are you doing up"
"We just landed, in case you didn't notice," I said, matter-of-factly. "Do you want to tell me what's wrong, because I have a pretty good feeling the engine is working just fine, unless you just trashed it right now."
Kaylee sighed. Oh, no. I recognize that sigh. Zoe makes that sigh when I've goofed something up. She walked over toward me, and together we went to sit in the galley. "Its nothing," she said.
"Liar," I poked her teasingly.
"Fine," she said after her trademark giggle. "But you have to promise to keep this between us."
"Hey, its a small ship," I joked, leaning back in my chair.
Kaylee gave me a look of mock exasperation, and then continued. "Well, there's this guy..."
"Simon," I finished for her, as she gave me another look. "What? Am I wrong? It can't be Jayne 'cause he=s all wrong for you. It can't be Book, 'cause that's just creepy. And Mal is out 'cause he acts too much like your big brother. Come on, did you honestly think I didn't know who it was?"
Kaylee stuck her tongue out at me. "So,...this guy, and I get along well. We're friends, but I don=t want to be just his friend forever. I want to be something more. He seems to want to be something more as well, but he never does anything about it." Kaylee finished by crossing her arms across her chest.
I silently chuckled, thinking about the time I had exactly the same thing happen to me. Zoe had been reluctant to get involved with me in the beginning, but I knew that deep down she desperately wanted to. I had to be patient, and wait for my over-whelming charisma and general studlyness to show her just how much she needed to be with me. "I know you're not going to want to hear this, but you need to be patient. Simon, he's not like us. And he's never met anyone like you before. You overwhelm him, but he doesn't know how to be with you. Just give him time; he'll come around. He would be a fool not to."
Kaylee nodded. "It's just that...," she let her thought trail off.
"Yeah," I prompted her.
"Well, I kinda kissed him."
"Kissed? Kissing is good." I smiled.
"Its good when there are two kissers, not a kisser and a kissee."
"Oh,@ I let my eyes fall to my hands. AWhat happened exactly?"
"I met him in the hall, and we talked for a while. Then, he started to say goodnight, and something just came over me. I leaned in...and...I ...kissed him. When I stepped back he blushed and left." Her voice reflected the pain his actions had caused her.
Slowly, I reached over to give her hand a squeeze. "He'll come around, in time," I said. "He knows that you two are meant for each other. To him, you are the only girl in the universe. I can see it in his eyes when he looks at you. He just hasn't figured out how to let you know what he is feeling."
Kaylee reached up and placed her other hand on top of mine. The two of us were quite for a minute or two. Personally, I can't stand heavy silences, so I stood up and asked her, "Can I get you anything? Something to eat or drink?"
"No thanks." She turned to face me as I stood behind the counter.
"Are you sure? Because I can..." My voice trailed off as I noticed a shadow in the doorway.
Kaylee noticed the expression of surprise on my face and let her gaze follow mine toward the door. "Simon," she said, slowly standing up. Her eyes never left him.
"Kaylee," Simon stepped down into the galley. "About before, I - well, you see - I didn't - I mean..."
As Simon struggled to express himself, I felt that this would be a good time to duck out and check up on Zoe. As I climbed down into our room, I could feel a wave of relief sweep over the ship. I knew everything would be alright now. After all, this ship isn't called Serenity for nothing.
