“Zoë…”

The voice echoed in the empty cabin. Logically River knew that there was no voice, there had been no one entered here since Serenity had re-entered the Black, and that the sound which reverberated through her mind was a mixture of memory and the other-worldly connection that River had always had with the dead.

‘Poor, Wash.’

He had died on this on this ship, cut down in his prime, impaled by a skewer thrown through the cockpit window by Reavers just after Serenity had landed at Mr. Universe’s complex.

Zoë put up a good front, but she grieved deeply for her late husband. Zoë couldn’t hear him, though.

Dying like he had had left a mark on the ship. A ghost, but without that level of cognizance. Wash had loved piloting Serenity, he had adored his wife and had had strong ties to most of the crew. Naturally that meant strong emotions and equally strong impressions of his life experiences could be felt all over the boat, but they were especially noticeable here in the bunk he had shared with Zoë and up on the deck.

River wished that Zoë could feel, like River, how much of Wash was still about.

She crept down the hall and back into her bunk, careful not to waken Simon sleeping with Kaylee next door. River snuck silently back into bed and wrapped the shaking form of the woman sleeping in River’s bunk into her arms.

“Don’t worry, Wash; I’ll take care of your warrior woman. I’ll make sure she knows that she’s not alone.”

River whispered into the silence and then she smiled to herself as she settled her face into the crook of Zoë’s neck, breathing in the soft scent of her hair as she drifted back into the void of the Black.
