Five ficlets

Disclaimer:These are not my characters and not my 'verse. All hail Joss.

These are all for [livejournal.com profile] the_girl_20, who gave me a set of five prompts to include all the crew. Mouseover the Chinese for translations.

Prompt: Zoe asks Wash to shave his moustache off.
Rating: PG
Warning: none
Pairing: Wash/Zoe
Character(s): Wash, Zoe

"It's gotta go."

"But why, sweetcakes? You can't just ask a man to sacrifice something he's worked on so hard with no reason." Wash stroked his moustache tenderly. "Been together a long time, we have. Us and the dinos. Through thick and thin." He thought for a moment. "All right, mostly the thin. But we're willing to try the thick."

Zoe suppressed laughter and tried to look stern. "I'm not asking. If you're serious about that request, I'm telling you. It has to go."

"You mean, it's you or the face-fuzz?"

She leaned back against the flight desk and nodded.

"You mean, if I shave it off, you'll actually kiss me?"

Another nod.

"Awww, hell." He set the brontosaurus down, and turned to face Zoe. "Well, old friend, it's been good. We've had some great times, but I figure it's time for us to move on. Sometimes, these things just don't work out. It's for the best. We can still see each other sometimes."

Zoe pushed off the flight desk and walked out, cursing to herself silently. Ignorant, yuben de pilot. Don't know what he's passing up.

Ten minutes later, a grinning, naked-faced pilot surprised her in the cargo bay.

Then she surprised him.

Prompt: Kaylee asks Inara why she's leaving.
Rating: G
Warning: none
Pairing: none
Character(s): Inara, Kaylee

She had only just reached the door to her shuttle before Kaylee caught up.

"Why, 'Nara? Why you gotta leave?"

Inara composed her features and turned to face the mechanic. "It's just time, Kaylee. I've been flying with Serenity a while now, and it's time for me to move on."

"But you ain't just leavin' Serenity! You're leavin' all of us. Zoe, Wash, me, Jayne, the captain...oh. Did he...?" She looked anxious.

"No, Kaylee. No more than usual." Inara relented and held one hand out to her friend. "I'll miss you, Kaylee. And the others. Well," she smiled ruefully, "maybe not Jayne. But everyone else."

Kaylee grasped her hand. "You ain't goin' yet, though, are you? Got a bit of time first?"

"A bit of time, yes. Until I can make arrangements and Mal finds time in his busy schedule to transport me to my destination." Inara tried hard, but couldn't keep all trace of bitterness from her voice.

"Oh, we ain't that busy, Inara. Got no jobs lined up. Cap'n was sayin' we might even have to get back to askin' Badger for work. But that don't mean you gotta go soon."

"I do, Kaylee. I can't stay here much longer. I might never leave."

"Would that be so bad?" Kaylee's face held a complex mix of sadness and hope.

Inara's training cried out to soothe her turmoil. "It would be very bad, Kaylee. Next time, I might have to do something permanent to Jayne!" They shared a giggle. "Why don't you come in? I can't take everything with me, it's not all suitable, and I'm sure we can find something to suit you."

"Me?" Kaylee gasped in delight. Inara nodded, and drew her through the door from the utilitarian passage into her miniature bower of color and luxury.

Prompt: River asks Jayne where he was born
Rating: G
Warning: none
Pairing: possible Jayne/River
Character(s): River, Jayne
Comment: Yes, I know the geography of this isn't strictly correct. Just remember River's not always talking about physical reality.

"A star danced." River drew her legs up and wrapped her arms around her knees, staring dreamily out into the black. "What sort of dance?"

Jayne stopped at the doorway. "What's with the dancin'?"

"Under that I was born." She turned in the chair, big eyes gazing over the back.

"Yeah, well. Old enough to know babies don't come from stars. Know where Mal went?"

She closed her eyes, concentrating. So few threads here, all so strong, all so knotted and warped. She reached for the muddy red, snarledtangledharshstrong, finding it twined with a smooth bluegreensilk among gunmetalgraysheets. "Busy." She opened her eyes again, staring straight at Jayne. "Doesn't want to be disturbed."

He grunted. "Ain't so urgent. What you doin' up here alone, anyhow?"

"Talking." She smiled, looking straight at him. "Talking to Serenity."

"Don't care what Mal says, you're still crazy."

"She likes it."

Jayne took a step further into the cockpit, intrigued despite himself. "What you talkin' on?"

"Stars." She pointed out of the screen without looking. "That one's mine."

"Yours? Ain't no-one got their own star. Moons, a planet here an' again." He stopped to think. "Towns, even, some folk got. Not stars."

River giggled. The bright sound was oddly out of place in the quiet dark. "Not mine to own. Mine. The one I was born under. Which one's yours?"

"What? Don't believe in that fei hua."

"Osiris, Capital City. Standard orbit around OsirisPrime. OsirisPrime, my star." She sighed. "Yours?"

"Oh, gotcha." Jayne leaned back against the wall, wondering why he was humoring the feng le girl. "Can't point it out as such. Somewhere out that quadrant." He waved an arm.

"IsisPrime. That fits. Which one?"

He didn't even ask. Just shut down, stood, turned, walked away. One word remained.

"Haven."

Her question was answered. The dance was a jig danced by a puppet with broken strings.

Prompt: Simon traces a scar on Mal's hip and asks where he got it
Rating: PG-13
Warning: slashiness
Pairing: Mal/Simon
Character(s): Mal, Simon, mention of Tracey

Wakefulness beckoned. Mal tried to ignore it, burrowing down towards the dark warmth of sleep. Wakefulness tickled.

"Mmmshfg gerroff." He batted at the ticklishness. It paused for a moment, then resumed. Mal surrendered and opened his eyes to see Simon, propped up on one elbow, lightly running an elegant finger over a scar on Mal's right hip.

"Wha'?"

Simon stopped and looked up at him. "Mmm?"

"Tickles."

"Oh. Sorry." He pulled his hand away.

Mal reached out to him and placed Simon's hand firmly back on his hip. "What you doin'?"

Simon squeezed gently. "Just wondering."

"You wonderin' with your fingertips now?" Mal grinned, gazing up into the beloved face.

Simon leaned down for a quick kiss. "Never complained before."

"Ain't complainin', hedgehog. What you wonderin'?"

"Where this one came from. It's healed better than the others. Less ridges. Smoother." He traced the pale scar with his thumb.

"That's because Zoe di'n't try fixin' it. An' it was a knife for a change, not bullets. Weren't even in a battle, so we'd got med-ships nearby. She dragged me out to some wet-behind-the-ears intern. Stitched me up nearly as neat as your work."

"He did a good job, but that doesn't tell me why someone was waving a knife very close to some of my favourite parts of your body."

"Sure you wanna hear this?" At Simon's nod, Mal looped one arm around his shoulders and pulled him down, close against his side. "Okay. You'll mind Tracey? Goofy kid, always in over his head? Anyhow, he comes back to our platoon one night, grinnin' his head off. Found himself a girl. Next night, he comes back trailin' a whole pack of her relations , an' her momma ain't too keen on lettin' Tracey keep what he's ruined her girl with. Got herself a good sharp kitchen knife, yellin' 'bout how she's gonna geld him. Now Tracey, he ain't too bright but he got a fine sense of self-preservation. He comes up to me an' Zoe, wantin' us to make it all go away. 'Course we can't, but Zoe figures if she can hide Tracey for a while, maybe momma-hen will go away. But momma-hen ain't gonna wait for Tracey to get away from her, she just stabs out with that ol' knife, Tracey steps aside an' it slides into me easy as you please."

Simon made a distressed sound, stroking the scar tissue as if he could still feel the wound that had caused it. Mal tightened his arm around Simon. "You asked, Simon."

"I did. What happened next?"

"Hmm? Oh, Tracey went runnin' off with Zo, an' she came back with our commander. He weren't too pleased at an unprovoked attack on his sergeant an' chased momma-hen an' all her chickens away 'fore they could get a word out 'bout why they'd turned up." He pressed a kiss onto Simon's forehead.

"I'm glad Zoe was there with you." Simon lifted his head to stare intently into his eyes.

"Me too, Simon. Me too. Hey, what you doin'?"

Simon wriggled out from his arm and slid down his body. "Kissing it better."

Prompt: Book asks God to keep the crew safe
Rating: G
Warning: none
Pairing: none
Character(s): Book
Extra disclaimer: I'm not a Christian. I'm not used to writing prayer!

Lord, these are good people. Not virtuous, not selfless, but human, with all the failings and flaws of humanity overlaid with strength and belief.

They need your help, Lord. This is a harsh life. It strips away niceties and weakness. Let them remember the goodness and love that surrounds every one of them.

They walk in the darkness, burning fiercely bright, unable to see beyond the immediate needs of survival. Open their eyes, Lord. Allow them to see the light of the home and the family they have created.

Is breaking a law always a wrong thing? Is it a sin? Your Son whom You gave to Earth-that-was broke laws, fought injustice, did what was right. These people do what is right, even when it isn't the smart or the safe route to take.

They're flying blind, Lord. They don't know what's coming. They don't know what they're carrying. Neither does she fully know what she is or can be.

Keep them safe, Lord. Keep us all safe.

These are excellent. For some reason, the last one moved me the most even though I'm not Christian either. Loved the Zoe/Wash mustache one too.

Wonderful pieces! Each one possessed well thought emotions and character voices. Thanks!

All very nice! You know I especially love the M/S one! *g*

[identity profile] lvs2read.livejournal.com 2006-03-25 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, 'cause it wasn't like it was Mal/Tracey. *g*

These are all so lovely, the prayer at the end was...wow, not Christian either but it hit a good nerve there.

Slight correction

Christ did not break any laws- man misunderstood who He was.

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2006-03-26 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
It worked seemlessly and did net feel like a cheat at all, it simply felt like what Book would do/say at that time.

As a Christian, I have to say you'd make a great one if you could pray that well! Don't worry; I'm not proselytizing, just complimenting. I adore the Wash/Zoe one, too.

These were all in character and fascinating.

[identity profile] lafredgeorge13.livejournal.com 2006-03-26 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I can't for the life of me remember where Haven is, I know that I know and its killing me. Can you enlighten me? :D

[identity profile] lafredgeorge13.livejournal.com 2006-03-26 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So why is Jayne from there? Or did you just need a location? I'm confused :D

Thanks for clarifying :D

All of these are nifty, but I especially enjoyed the first and fourth ones. Your Wash/Zoe was sweet and movingly loving, and I liked the nicely detailed war story in your Mal/Simon very well. Lovely work all around!

So few threads here, all so strong, all so knotted and warped. She reached for the muddy red, snarledtangledharshstrong, finding it twined with a smooth bluegreensilk among gunmetalgraysheets.

Genius. I love that.
Of course I love it all but that line impressed me. Good job!

Interesting set. I liked the last one especially.

The first and the last were my favorite--especially the last. That was beautiful and simple. Dignified. From the heart and real, not something made to pretty up the inside of a prayer book.

Hell, if more prayers were like this one, I'd still be a believer.
