Title: Full Tank
Author: greta_garbo
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Jayne/River
Rating: PG
Disclaimers: I OWN ALL!!!!!!!!!!
Summary: Everyone returns to the ship after Out of Gas. Jayne and River while waiting for Mal to wake up.
Notes: While I was watching the last scene, right when Mal wakes up before anyone notices, we hear a bit of the conversations going on in the room. The one between Inara and Jayne pretty much goes: Inara: I think it's something he should see when he wakes up. Jayne: He's seen blood before. Lots of it. Well, part of this is me trying to explain what they're talking about. Unless they're actually talking about something that was explained in the episode, it which case, I feel like a total idiot. And either way, I think what I came up with is rather lame, so I guess it doesn't matter so much. This is quite possibly the worst Firefly fic I've written.

Inara was the first one off the shuttle, despite the fact that she was furthest from the door. She’d been keen to get off the shuttle even before Wash had called them and said they were headed back. The combination of Jayne’s complaining about her incense, and the fact that she hadn’t wanted to leave Mal in the first place made her incredibly antsy.
The truth of the matter was that Jayne didn’t really know what to do. Kaylee had immediately taken off toward the engine room to check on her girl while Inara frantically ran toward the cockpit looking for Mal. Shepherd Book just looked at Jayne. “I’m thinking the mostly likely place to check would be the infirmary,” the older man stated, and Jayne just nodded.
“The infirmary?” Inara asked. “What, do you think Mal was hurt?”
“Well, we saw that the other shuttle was already docked, and since nobody seems to be above deck, they’re obviously below,” Book explained.
“And this is Mal we’re talkin’ about,” Jayne added as he started toward the infirmary.
When they reached the infirmary, they were treated to two sights. One familiar, and one not so familiar. The familiar sight was Mal on the bed with Simon working over him, to which Inara immediately rushed and began asking Simon questions. The unfamiliar sight was Wash standing outside the infirmary with an armful of sobbing River.
“It’s alright, it’s alright,” Wash was saying quietly to the girl while rubbing comforting circles on her back.
“What’s going on?” Jayne asked.
“Well, Mal was shot,” Wash said in a ‘well, duh’ tone of voice. “But River’s been carrying on like this before Zoe even woke up and made us come back. Only,” Wash was cut off when River let out a loud wail. “Only she’s been worse since we got back.”
Simon stuck his head out the door. “Wash, I’m ready for you.”
Jayne sent Wash a questioning look. “He needs a transfusion,” Wash explained. And, without any further explanation, he handed River of to Jayne and went into the infirmary.
Jayne wasn’t quite sure what to do with the sobbing teenager. River, however, didn’t miss a beat. She buried her face in his chest and balled his t-shirt up in her hands as she continued to sob.
“There, there,” he said as he awkwardly patted her back.
“Should have known,” River sobbed miserably.
“Uh…yeah,” Jayne responded, not sure what else to say.
“Should have felt it. Shouldn’t have left him,” River mumbled.
Jayne was starting to understand her a bit. He, too, had felt bad leaving Mal all alone on the dying boat, and he hardly had any feelings at all. He couldn’t really imagine what it was doing to this little girl.
He wrapped his arms around her more easily, finding a bit of comfort in the fact the he sympathized with her. She continued to sob for several minutes before suddenly stopping. After a few moments, she turned her head up to his face and smiled. “It’s okay now,” she said. “Captain and Serenity both have a full tank. It’s all fine.”
“Um…good,” Jayne stuttered out, unsettled by the girls speedy change in mood.
He smile grew wider. “Your arms are warm,” she said dreamily.
The way she was looking at him made Jayne all too uncomfortable, so he released his grip on her and stepped back.
She still smiled at him, and even with the distance between them it was making him feel strange. And not even in an uncomfortable way. Just….strange.
River’s smile turned wicked. “The lion shall lie down with the lamb,” River sang out.”
“Huh?”
Before River could answer him, Inara walked over, relief written across her face. “He’s going to be fine,” she said.
“Patched up and filled,” River nodded.
Inara’s attention went to River’s arm. “Mei mei, what happened?” Inara asked as she gingerly grabbed River’s arm, which Jayne noticed for the first time was marked with bleeding scratch marks.
River’s demeanor quickly changed again, and she looked down, her hair covering her face. “Memories not mine, didn’t want them. Belong to him, shouldn’t be looking. Wanted to get them out.”
She tried to pull her arm away gently but Inara’s gentle grip was strong. “Sweetie, you should have those looked at.”
Jayne could tell River didn’t want Inara messing with her, so he jumped to the girl’s defense. “Come on, ‘Nara, leave the girl alone. Can’t you see she don’t wanna be messed with?”
Inara looked uncertainly at Jayne, but dropped River’s arm. Sighing, she said, “I think Mal should see it.”
“Why?” Jayne asked, confused.
“I know, she’s always acted oddly, but she’s never hurt herself like this before, it’s different.”
Jayne wasn’t liking the way Inara was talking about River like she wasn’t standing right there, so he tried to end the conversation. “It’s something her brother should be worrying over, not the captain.”
“Still, I think it’s something he should see when he wakes up,” Inara tried.
“He’s seen blood before,” Jayne countered. “Lots of it.”
Before Inara could respond, River’s face broke into a smile, followed by Zoë’s, “Welcome back, sir.”
