When she found him in the kitchen, alone at the table fixing some engine part Kaylee had stumbled upon in the junkyard on Boros, she couldn’t help herself. Sitting down across from him, Zoe watched him work, large hands tinkering with the smallest detail. He grinned at her, all teeth and crinkled eyes, and she just stared back.

“What’s your real name?” she asked, finally voicing the question that had been gnawing at her curiosity for several weeks.

“Wash is my real name. Well, it’s Washburn, but it isn’t like I’m using a fake name, just a shortened version. A nickname, if you will.” He raised his eyebrows. “I can start calling you ‘Al’ if you want. We could be like nickname twins.”

“I meant your first name.”

“Don’t use it,” he grumbled, breaking eye contact. It was clear that he didn’t like his first name very much.

“So I’ve noticed. Doesn’t mean I can’t know it,” Zoe said, using the tone of voice she’d acquired during the war that compelled men to follow orders.

“It’s ‘Hoban,’ okay?”

He grimaced when he said it, his large fingers slipping on the engine part. She saw a flash of red across his thumb before he was sucking at the digit, face screwed up in pain and concentration. Zoe tossed him a towel from her end of the table and studied him as he stemmed the blood flow.

Hoban.

He looked like a Hoban, she thought. The name reminded her of the stories her father’s mechanic used to tell her when she was little, before she grew up and learned that kings and knights and jesters would never have been able to hack it in this ‘verse. Hoban. It sounded goofy and strong all at the same time.

Kind of like him.

She looked up to find Wash eyeing her, as if to see what she thought of his name.

“I don’t think it’s so bad,” she said, and walked away from the table. But not before she caught his grin that followed her from the kitchen.
