Author:
me_fein aka Erica (aka dulceamargo** on fanfiction.net - where I will be posting these tonight, too)
Email: me-fein AT livejournal DOT com
Summary: 2 drabbles - first one focuses on Zoë, second on River; but related in subject matter, kinda sorta
Rating: G
Characters: (1) Zoë; (2) River
Pairing: none
Spoilers/Timeline: after the BDM
Disclaimer: Joss is my master; I humbly submit my insight into his 'verse
Author's Note: My first foray into fanfic. Critique is fine, but be gentle with me, please!
Zoë rolled over, half-asleep, but still remained on her side of the bed. His side was smooth and the pillow aligned with exact precision. She never did understand how he could live with the clutter, sparse as it were.
Life in the black went on as usual; easier for the moment, in fact. They had picked up a decent job soon after Serenity was repaired and River was doing well enough at the dinosaur-laden helm from what she could tell. The captain constantly beamed about his little albatross.
For as full of cargo as they were, Zoë was as empty.

River kept her distance, now; like he did, but different. She barely stayed in her quarters, sleeping under the stars in the copilot’s chair. She could fly the ship without much trouble, but she wasn’t the pilot. Not yet, and probably never. Not the way he was.
She didn’t need to be, but it was the nature of the thing. She understood her place. The captain and her brother were the only ones who saw her on a regular basis, now, but she was alright with that, too. This was a kind of solitude she could live with, at least.
