Author's Note: A friend of mine once said she could never ship Mal/Inara because they were too different and too inflexible, and that it would always be doomed so long as neither of them was willing to change. I seem to have taken that as a dare. This is approximately 2,500 words in which Inara bends a little. No hanky panky. Yet. There will (eventually) be a sequel, in which it's Mal's turn to flex. Set post-BDM, it is in the same verse as all my other stories, and it weaves in and around the events of "Going On", covering much of the same time span, from Inara's perspective this time.
