Summary: Desperate for profits and food after a gunfight on a border moon, Mal and crew take on four new passengers. The first is a clean-cut, enthusiastic, young man whose career choice puzzles the crew until they learn how he spends his nights. The second is a semi-celebrity without much clout, but whose true origins leave the crew gobsmacked and speechless. The other two are a young woman whose muteness stymies Simon but gives River a chance to open up, and her brother, an unlikely Escort (think of them like male Companions) with, according to Kaylee, the “sweetest blush this side o’ Londinum.” As the story unfolds, Serenity and her faithful gang find themselves in a bitter war with an organization comprised mostly of grandmothers, caught in a trade war for control of seven priceless cameras, and pitting their wits, guns, and, eventually, lives on the line against the ever-feared and ever-hated Alliance.
