Oh man, this is fantastic. Everything, from your imagery to your characterization to each brief snapshot we get of them...it breaks my heart, but there's an overwhelming sense of rightness.
You had the courage to do what many writers - including myself - can't: not give them a happy ending. As much as I love happy endings for these two, I think this rings very true.
